3D pop-out picture effects grab attention like CRAZY. They look so fancy! But a lot of blogs don’t use them because they look complicated and time consuming and require programs like Photoshop.
But for those of us who don’t have time for all that nonsense, I’m here to show you an easy work-around with programs like Canva. The best part is this only takes a couple minutes!
If you don’t have a Pro account, you could probably still achieve this with a couple different free apps. I’m not going to cover the different apps you could use in this tutorial, so if you have a suggestion, feel free to leave a comment and share. I will say that you just need to make sure they remove the background and you can customize the photo frames and any extra elements to match your brand.
But to be honest, I’m all about doing things to easy way so for this tutorial I’m going to stick to with Canva Pro.
What is a 3D pop-out picture and why does it matter?
It’s pretty self explanatory but just in case you’re not sure…
A 3D pop-out picture is a photo effect that takes an ordinary image and creates the illusion that it’s popping out of an object, frame or some other shape.
Why does it matter? It looks cool!
3D images are more attention-grabbing so they are great for blog post graphics or youtube thumbnails. They will make you stand out more than using just regular stock photos with a filter.
And it’ll show off your personality right away!

Collect your assets
Assets are the different pieces you need to create a graphic.
To create a simple pop-out effect, you need a frame (I’m using a phone frame you can find In Canva under “elements” ➡️ “frames”), and a photo (click on “photos” ➡️ type in the search bar what you’re looking for. I searched for “hand.”)
Change any colors to your frame to match your brand colors.
If you wish to add in any other elements, go for it. For example, I added a dollar sign to hover over the hand. This step is optional, of course.
Prep your photo to POP
Duplicate your chosen photo using the the icon with the two boxes with the plus sign.
Drag one photo to the frame, and if you’re working in Canva, it’ll just snap into place. Make sure you position the image so that the part you want to pop-out is cut off by the edge of the frame. When you’re done with this, click or tap on the padlock icon in the upper right corner to lock this photo into the frame.

Now for the really cool part!
Select the duplicated image (the one that’s not in the frame) and go to “effects” ➡️ “background remover” and remove the background.
Once the background is removed, move this image over the one in the frame and adjust the size and position so it matches the one in the frame.
To make this easier, adjust the transparency to line up the images. Once it’s just right, put the transparency back to 100 percent. The two images should like one. Don’t get hung up on perfection. Zoom out and if it look good, roll with it.
Crop the image where it needs it. I like to crop as close to the part that’s “popping out” as I can.
Unlock the image you locked earlier, and group them all together by dragging your mouse over the whole image and selecting “group.”
This will make it a lot easier to move or scale the image without messing anything up.
That is all it takes to create a pop-out effect in a simple to use program like Canva and it only takes a few minutes!
2 extra tips for making this 3D pop-out picture
Extra tip: you don’t have to stop there, you can add in extra elements to match your brand, add personality, or describe the purpose of the photo. (For example, a dollar sign is perfect for a marketing, money making or money saving type of subject.)
One more tip: keep is simple. For the love of all that is still good in the world, please don’t over complicate this. It does not have to be perfect. If it takes more than a few minutes to achieve this, take some things away. Trust me, it’ll look better.
You can make kick-ass unique looking graphics without complicated software. Upping your game in graphic design (even if you’re not a graphic designer) will grab more attention to your blog.
So I’m curious, how long did it take you to make this graphic?
Remember that the goal here is to make something cool, not perfect, in the easiest fastest way possible.
